UNC facilities turns to FSI to keep hospitals in good shape

UNC Facilities needed a new CMMS equipped with the right usability and tools to keep their facilities healthy. What they got was a true partner.


Helping keep hospital facilities healthy is job one for FSI

An EKG for facilities

With more than 450 beds, the UNC Heath Southeastern system serves 15,000 inpatients and more than 60,000 emergency patients annually. Keeping its facilities healthy is where facility support administrator Kebrina Locklear comes in.

“CMS is basically my day-to-day communication with our technicians,” said Kebrina. “Anything that comes through, whether it be plumbing issues, HVAC, ceiling tiles, anything, I coordinate those work orders. Each tech has a phone; they get an alert from CMS and an email and that’s how they know what they have to do for the day.”

All the data Kebrina gets from the CMS system is extremely valuable in revealing the health of Southeastern’s medical facilities. Think of CMS as an EKG for systems and equipment.

Compliance made easy

“Because we’re a health care system,” continued Kebrina, “we also use the system to keep up with our data for the state. CMS helps us run preventive maintenance on all of our life safety and routine equipment. Its reporting tools make it easy to keep up with the compliance data that’s always needed.”

All of which has helped UNC Health Southeastern maintain accreditation by DNV GL, a world-leading certification body that helps hospitals achieve excellence by maintaining or exceeding patient safety standards set forth by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Indebted to CMS

For Joe Buri, Director, Facility Services at UNC Health Southeastern, CMS works as a reporting and recognition tool. 

“I appreciate the scanning capabilities of CMS Tech as well as the reporting functions,” he explained. “It helps us form a regulatory standpoint, in customer service, and also as a recognition and evaluation tool. We have a team of 26 techs, and I use the reporting function to point out the top performers. I can also use the tool to see who’s getting their work done and who might be getting good comments from customers.”

Kebrina points out how other executives use the tool. 

“As far as with my upper-level executives, they use CMS for reports, like when we have to do hospital KPIs, key performance indicators. They also create their own reports, because you can select different criteria and CMS will make a report for you. And like Joe said, he uses it as a performance indicator. So, it’s used a lot.”

“As for me, I have to use CMS every moment of my job. I’m indebted to it,” added Kebrina.
